I’ve chose to work on Freitag. Back in 1993, graphic designer brothers Markus and Daniel Freitag were on the lookout for a messenger bag. Zurich citizens worthy of the name travel by bicycle. When it rains, they get wet. The FREITAG brothers wanted a heavy-duty, functional and water-repellent bag to carry their designs. Inspired by the cheerfully coloured lorries rumbling along the cross-Zurich highway just in front of their flat, they cut a messenger bag out of an old truck tarpaulin. As the carry belt, they used second-hand car seat-belt webbing, while an old bicycle inner tube provided the edging.
As luck would have it, their personal need turned into a business which now employs more than 80 people. Since their original messenger bag, the FREITAG brothers have developed and marketed more than 40 bags for women and men. FREITAG products now sell round the globe, in over 300 shops.

ReplyDeleteFreitag's concept of using old materials for heavy duty bags is brillant. Considering present society's eco-consciousness, Freitag's idea is even more relevant in today's context.
ReplyDeleteI think Freitag is useful in many ways. In terms of physical appearance, it's unique designs, which makes use of bright colours, caught the eyes of many people. But at the same time, it has internal use such as being water repellent. Hence, it is advantageous in both ways.
ReplyDeletei think the idea of recycling is great, especially when it makes the bag unique by being the one and only.
ReplyDeleteA Freitag bag is really functional and durable judging from the material they use. And I agree with cherlyn, the recycling idea that make each design of the bag different from another is great, it makes their bags much more appealing.

ReplyDeleteMy perception of Freitag is that they are a symbol of being part of the "alternative" in the society as it is not that a common brand in Singapore. Also, there is a creative usage of materials & the inspirations of their designs are quirky too.
ReplyDeleteThe Freitag concept: Every Bag Is Different, is very attractive to people who wants to own a bag that no second person has the same one. Their designs are very unique in their own way.
ReplyDeleteI like their idea of every bag being different and that the bags are durable/water-repellent however the brand Tagger also offers similar items with almost the same concept and even material used are mostly similar.
ReplyDeleteTheir unique approach of recycling used materials for bags have been widely accepted and eco-friendly have been a major trend that most products are moving towards and concern about. However, it is abit overprice or expensive to get one, even though it is durable, unique and every bag is different from one another. The brand itself might have a similar image or identity with another brand named "tagger"
ReplyDeleteA very smart choice of Freitag to use recycled materials to make into new products. Although it uses recycled material, it is durable. Waterproof plus there is only one design for one bag so it single out Freitag, making it distinctive from the other brands.
ReplyDeleteOnly having one design for one bag, it appeals to people who hates to be seen having the same exact stuff as others. It makes the brand unique. The fact that it does recycling is great as today, being eco-friendly is promoted.

ReplyDeletei think that. the way Freitag advertises its bags in a simple way, which makes people able to understand their stand for an eco friendly environment. as well its use of recycled materials, which sets a very good example to people to save our grean earth. not only that, people buy the bags that are unique and designed in such a way that no bag is the same. of course, everyone here has mentioned that the bag is unique, is eco friendly, is for the saving our green planet. but is it affordable? and would people actually buy them to save the environment/be unique? is it catered to the mass?
ReplyDeleteYes I do agree with the above points mentioned. Freitag indeed helps to spread the message of being eco-friendly, however to a certain extent. As compared to reusable grocery bags which spreads the eco-friendly message more effectively, it is also much more affordable than a Freitag.
ReplyDeleteTherefore I feel that being eco-friendly might not be the main message that Freitag is trying to put through. It is the individuality and 'being unique' that attracts their niche market.
Interesting concept. I think i might get one of those. But if something is too durable, wont it lead to design obsolency?
ReplyDeleteya agree. If it can be used for so long, then why people bother to get new designs when their bags are perfectly alright & usable? :] Very unique though, having just one design for every single bag :]
ReplyDeleteIts bright colour attracts consumers. People tends to desire bags with unique design which cannot be seen on another person if they buy it. Thus, Freitag fulfill their satisfaction.
